IIT Scholarships: Studying at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur is a dream for countless engineering and research aspirants. However, financial limitations often become a major barrier. To support talented and deserving students, IIT Kanpur offers several scholarships that reduce tuition costs, living expenses, and other academic burdens.

These scholarships are designed to promote academic excellence, encourage inclusivity, and ensure that students from diverse economic backgrounds can pursue world-class education without financial stress.

1. Bright Minds Scholarship

Students who secure an All India Rank (AIR) within the top 100 in JEE Advanced are eligible for the prestigious Bright Minds Scholarship.
Benefits include:

  • Financial assistance of ₹3 lakh per year
  • Coverage of the entire cost of undergraduate education at IIT Kanpur

This scheme ensures that top-performing students can focus on academics without worrying about expenses.

2. Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarship

This scholarship is available for non-SC/ST students whose annual parental income is below ₹4.5 lakh.

Benefits:

  • Full tuition fee waiver
  • Monthly allowance of ₹1,000

Students must maintain a minimum CPI of 6.5 to continue receiving the allowance. If the CPI drops between 6.0 and 6.5, only the allowance stops—but the tuition fee waiver remains.

3. INSPIRE Scholarship

Students enrolled in B.S. programmes in Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics with an AIR within 10,000 in the Common Merit List (CML) can apply for this scholarship.

Benefits:

  • ₹30,000 per semester (₹60,000 yearly)
  • Research grant of ₹20,000 per year

To remain eligible, students must maintain a CPI of 6.0 and submit a declaration each semester stating they are not receiving any other scholarship.

4. Donor-Funded Scholarships

IIT Kanpur manages 129 donor scholarships sponsored by alumni and private contributors.

These scholarships are awarded based on:

  • Merit
  • Financial need
  • Department-specific performance
  • Economic background

Eligibility criteria vary depending on the donor’s guidelines.

5. Free Basic Mess Scholarship

SC/ST students with annual parental income below ₹4.5 lakh can apply for this scheme.

Benefits include:

  • Full waiver of the basic mess charges
  • Additional pocket allowance to help with daily expenses

6. External Scholarships

Apart from institute-level schemes, IIT Kanpur assists students in applying for external scholarships offered by:

  • Central and state governments
  • Public sector undertakings
  • Private organizations

Students must complete the application process independently, while IIT Kanpur supports institutional verification. The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is a major platform for such opportunities.

7. Sports Scholarships

Every year, IIT Kanpur awards 20 sports scholarships to students who excel in athletics or represent the institute in Inter-IIT or other recognized competitions.

Benefit:

  • ₹1,000 per month for nine months

8. Academic Excellence Awards

Students who achieve a CPI of 8.5 or above in the previous academic year are eligible for Academic Excellence Awards, which recognize outstanding academic achievements.

How Scholarship Management Works at IIT Kanpur

Most scholarships are managed by the Students’ Scholarship and Prizes Committee (SSPC).

For schemes like MCM, submitting a parental income certificate automatically makes students eligible for multiple institute and donor-funded scholarships.

While institute scholarships are processed internally, students applying for external scholarships must follow the required steps and request verification when needed.
