Dhurandhar

Dhurandhar is no longer just a blockbuster—it is fast becoming a defining moment for modern Hindi cinema. Director Aditya Dhar’s political-action epic has rewritten box office rules by succeeding without conventional promotional tactics, festive release advantages, or franchise backing. As the film inches closer to ₹500 crore nett in India, it is now firmly on course to enter the elite ₹1,000 crore global box office club.

For a Hindi film that kept its narrative tightly guarded until release, ran for a formidable three hours and 33 minutes, and opened outside a holiday window, Dhurandhar’s performance is extraordinary. Even more striking is the cultural conversation it has sparked—provoking debate, discomfort, and engagement in equal measure, while reaffirming cinema’s power to challenge audiences.

A Historic Box Office Run

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Dhurandhar has already amassed approximately ₹700 crore gross worldwide within two weeks of release. Strong weekday holds, packed weekend shows, and sustained footfalls suggest that the ₹1,000 crore global milestone could be breached by the end of its third weekend—a trajectory rarely seen for a non-franchise Hindi film.

What makes this achievement even more significant is the company Dhurandhar is poised to join. Indian cinema’s ₹1,000 crore club remains an exclusive space dominated by large-scale spectacles and established franchises, including:

  • Dangal – ₹2,070.3 crore
  • Baahubali 2 – ₹1,788.06 crore
  • Pushpa 2 – ₹1,742.1 crore
  • RRR – ₹1,230 crore
  • Jawan – ₹1,160 crore
  • Pathaan – ₹1,055 crore
  • Kalki 2898 AD – ₹1,042.25 crore

When Dhurandhar enters this bracket, it will stand apart as a film that achieved scale through political intensity and narrative conviction, rather than mythology, fantasy, or brand familiarity.

How Dhurandhar Changed the Rules

Trade expert and producer Girish Johar credits the film’s success to its unapologetic storytelling.
“The biggest credit goes to Aditya Dhar,” Johar says. “He trusted the audience’s intelligence. The film doesn’t spoon-feed its narrative or characters, and that made all the difference.”

Johar also highlights the film’s genre-blending strength. “It’s patriotic, it’s a political thriller, it’s action and drama—all of it merges seamlessly. When that balance clicks, audiences respond in a big way,” he adds.

Dhurandhar has proven that Hindi cinema can thrive by respecting audience maturity rather than relying on formula-driven spectacle.

A Career-Defining Moment for Ranveer Singh

Beyond industry implications, Dhurandhar marks a crucial turning point in Ranveer Singh’s career. Once regarded as the most dynamic performer of his generation, Singh had faced doubts about his box office pull in recent years despite bold creative choices.

According to Johar, the film firmly re-establishes Singh’s commercial standing.
“He’s one of the strongest forces in Indian cinema,” Johar says. “Every actor goes through cycles. This film places him on a very high pedestal and gives him solid footing for the future.”

Notably, Singh’s performance is defined by restraint as much as presence. “He surrendered completely to the director’s vision and allowed actors like Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, and Rakesh Bedi to shine. That’s something only a secure actor can do,” Johar notes.

This collaborative approach stands in contrast to star-centric films where narratives often bend to image rather than story.

The Next Big Record on the Horizon

Currently, Shah Rukh Khan is the only Bollywood actor to deliver two ₹1,000 crore global grossers (Pathaan and Jawan). With Dhurandhar nearing that mark and Dhurandhar 2 slated for release in March 2026, speculation has already begun.

If the sequel sustains even part of the original’s momentum, Ranveer Singh could become the fastest Hindi actor to deliver two consecutive ₹1,000 crore global hits.

Johar, however, urges balance. “As a fan, I’d say yes, why not? But as a trade analyst, many factors matter—release timing, competition, public sentiment. Let’s first celebrate what Dhurandhar is achieving right now.”

More Than Just Numbers

Dhurandhar’s box office journey represents more than financial success. It signals a renewed appetite for bold, uncompromising Hindi cinema—films that refuse to dilute their politics, soften their characters, or apologise for their intensity.

As Johar sums it up, “Audiences were blown away by the rawness, the perspective, and the intensity. It was something genuinely new.”

When Dhurandhar crosses ₹1,000 crore globally, it won’t just mark a commercial milestone—it will stand as proof that the future of Hindi cinema lies not in playing safe, but in trusting audiences to embrace ambition head-on.
