IIT Indore Witnesses Strong Surge in Student Choices Across UG Programmes: IIT Indore has recorded a significant rise in student preference across almost all of its undergraduate programmes, as per the 2025 Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) choice-count data. Computing-led courses continue to dominate, with Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) once again emerging as the most sought-after programme.
CSE Leads with Highest Growth in Choices
Computer Science and Engineering received 23,410 choices in 2025, up from 20,763 in 2024, reflecting a 12.75% year-on-year increase. This sustained surge highlights growing student interest in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, deep-tech innovation, and software engineering—career paths that remain top priorities across IITs.
Mathematics & Computing Remains a Fast-Growing Favourite
Mathematics and Computing continued its upward trajectory, reporting a 12.76% rise in choices—from 14,659 in 2024 to 16,529 in 2025. The programme’s rising popularity is closely tied to booming opportunities in data science, quantitative finance, cryptography, and algorithm-driven research roles.
Electrical Engineering Registers Double-Digit Growth
Electrical Engineering also held strong, witnessing an 11.47% jump from 16,827 choices to 18,757. Students continue to view this branch as a gateway to careers in semiconductor technology, power systems, signal processing, embedded electronics, and next-generation hardware development.
Core Engineering Branches Show Steady Revival
Traditional engineering branches at IIT Indore posted impressive growth:
- Mechanical Engineering: Up 9.49%, rising from 15,001 to 16,426 choices
- Civil Engineering: Up 10.85%, increasing from 11,839 to 13,124 choices
The continued rise in core branches indicates renewed interest driven by expanding opportunities in manufacturing, infrastructure, sustainability, and research-backed industrial technologies.
Engineering Physics and Materials Science Gain Momentum
- Engineering Physics recorded a 10.85% increase (from 8,256 to 9,152), reflecting growing enthusiasm for physics-led research areas such as quantum technologies, photonics, and advanced instrumentation.
- Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science also climbed 9.87%, from 8,995 to 9,883, underscoring the importance of materials engineering in aerospace, nanotechnology, and high-performance manufacturing.
Meanwhile, Chemical Engineering saw a stable 7.73% rise, increasing from 11,885 to 12,804 choices.
Space Sciences Programme Rebranded, Attracts Higher Interest
One of this year’s notable updates is the name change of the Space Sciences programme. The former Space Sciences and Engineering, which received 9,664 choices in 2024, has been reintroduced as Space Science and Engineering. Under its new name, the programme drew 10,998 choices, indicating stronger visibility and increasing interest in space technology, satellite engineering, and astrophysics-driven disciplines.
IIT Indore Strengthens Its Position Across Disciplines
Overall, the JIC 2025 data reflects IIT Indore’s strong and consistent upward trend. The institute continues to align with national and global shifts in engineering education, with computing, data-driven programmes, and core engineering branches all experiencing robust growth. The rising interest across diverse fields underscores IIT Indore’s expanding influence and the evolving aspirations of engineering aspirants in India.
