Schools Closed Due to Cold Wave: An intense cold wave across several parts of India has severely impacted daily life, prompting state governments and district administrations to close schools, revise timings, or extend winter vacations to protect students’ health. From Jharkhand and Bihar to Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Tripura, multiple regions have announced temporary school closures due to extreme cold and dense fog.
Below is a state-wise list of school closures and revised schedules amid the ongoing cold wave:
Jharkhand: Ranchi Schools Closed Till January 10
The Ranchi district administration has ordered the closure of all schools till January 10, 2026, following an IMD cold wave warning.
The directive applies to all government, private, aided, unaided, minority schools, and institutions from KG to Class 12.
Bihar: Katihar Schools Shut for Classes Up to 8
In Katihar district, the administration has invoked Section 163 of the Indian Civil Defence Code 2023, suspending educational activities up to Class 8 in all government and private schools, including pre-schools and Anganwadi centres, until January 10, 2026.
Uttar Pradesh: Multiple Districts Announce School Closures
Agra
All schools affiliated with UP Board, CBSE, ICSE, and other boards will remain closed till January 12, 2026, for students up to Class 12.
Lucknow
Schools from pre-primary to Class 8 are closed till January 10, 2026.
Classes 9 to 12 will operate with revised timings from 10 am to 3 pm.
Varanasi
All schools from pre-primary to Class 8 remained closed from January 7 to January 9 due to persistent fog and cold.
Ghaziabad
Schools up to Class 8 are closed till January 10.
Noida (Gautam Buddh Nagar)
All recognised schools up to Class 8, across CBSE, ICSE, IB, UP Board, and other boards, will remain closed till January 10.
Punjab: Winter Holidays Extended Till January 13
The Punjab government has declared holidays in all government and private schools till January 13, 2026, due to rising cold and fog. Schools will reopen on January 14.
Haryana: Winter Vacation Till January 15
The Directorate of School Education has announced winter holidays from January 1 to January 15, 2025, for all government and private schools. Classes will resume on January 16.
Delhi: Winter Break as Per Academic Calendar
According to the Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE), winter vacations for the 2025–26 academic session will be observed from January 1 to January 15, 2026.
Rajasthan: Jaipur and Jalore School Holidays
- Jaipur:
- Schools up to Class 5 closed till January 10
- Classes 6 to 8 closed till January 8
- Jalore:
- Schools from pre-primary to Class 5 closed till January 10, 2026
Madhya Pradesh: Bhopal Revises School Timings
Instead of closures, Bhopal schools have revised timings.
Classes for Nursery to Class 8 will begin after 9:30 am, as directed by the District Education Officer.
Jammu and Kashmir: Extended Winter Vacations
In the Kashmir Valley and Jammu winter zone, schools are closed due to sub-zero temperatures:
- Classes up to 8: Reopen on March 1, 2026
- Higher classes: Resume on February 22, 2026
Telangana: Sankranti Holidays Extended
The Telangana School Education Department has extended Sankranti holidays till January 16, 2026. Schools will now reopen on January 17, following the declaration of Kanuma as an optional holiday.
Assam: Bongaigaon Schools Closed Till January 10
All government, provincialised, and private schools in Bongaigaon district are closed from January 7 to January 10, 2026, covering LP, UP, ME, MV, High, and Higher Secondary levels.
Tripura: Schools Closed From January 6 to 10
The Tripura government has ordered the closure of all government, aided, and private schools from January 6 to January 10, citing extreme cold conditions.
