Significance of Tulsi Vivah

Tulsi Vivah holds immense spiritual importance in Hinduism. The festival celebrates the divine marriage of Lord Vishnu (in the form of Shaligram) and Goddess Tulsi (Vrinda), symbolizing purity, devotion, and eternal love.

Tulsi, also known as Holy Basil, is considered a manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. It is believed that no worship of Lord Vishnu is complete without offering Tulsi leaves (Tulsi Patra).

On this sacred day, devotees perform a traditional marriage ceremony between the idols of Lord Shaligram and Goddess Tulsi, decorating them with ornaments and flowers. The ritual is carried out with the same enthusiasm and rituals as a human wedding, symbolizing divine union and the victory of faith and virtue.

Unmarried men and women especially take part in Tulsi Vivah Puja to seek blessings for a happy and ideal life partner.

Story of Tulsi Vivah: The Legend of Vrinda and Jalandhar

According to Hindu scriptures, Vrinda was a pious woman and a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. She was married to Jalandhar, a powerful demon created from Lord Shiva’s anger. Due to Vrinda’s unwavering devotion and chastity (Pativrata Dharma), no one could defeat Jalandhar in battle.

The gods sought Lord Vishnu’s help to end Jalandhar’s tyranny. To fulfill this divine purpose, Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar and appeared before Vrinda while she was performing a puja for her husband’s victory. As a result, her chastity was unintentionally broken, and Jalandhar was defeated and killed in battle.

When Vrinda discovered the truth, she cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into a Shaligram stone. Later, realizing her mistake, she withdrew the curse but sacrificed her own life. To honor her devotion, Lord Vishnu blessed her to be reborn as the Tulsi plant, declaring that his worship would always be incomplete without Tulsi leaves. Their union is celebrated annually as Tulsi Vivah.
